Latest News from around the World

Wrestling Observer

WWF’s King of the Ring took place and during the show they aired a video of WWF stars working with the Special Olympics. Several wrestling experts think it’s pathetic how WWF uses the Special Olympics to put themselves over and says, “don’t confuse public relations with charity work.” During the show which took place in Philadelphia, there were tons of “ECW!” chants, and they lowered the crowd audio when they figured out what the crowd was saying.

The WWF Hall of Fame banquet took place the night before King of the Ring. Pedro Morales was inducted, but no-showed the event since he does Spanish-language commentary for WCW and worried that appearing at the banquet would jeopardize his position in WCW. Aside from Morales, the other inductees were The Grand Wizard, Ivan Putski, The Fabulous Moolah, George Steele, Ernie Ladd, and Antonino Rocca.

Rumor is the first taping of WCW’s Monday night show, might take place from the Paramount Theater in Madison Square Garden, which is WWF turf.

New Japan top star Hiroshi Hase has done an about-face on his retirement announcement, now saying that he doesn’t plan to retire after he lost his election bid.

Paul Wight is expected to officially debut in a pre-taped segment at the Clash of the Champions in some sort of angle. WCW doesn’t want a repeat of the Shockmaster fiasco and since Wight is so inexperienced (he’s only had 1 match ever), it’s better for him not to do any angles on live TV.

Former NFL star Lawrence Taylor is telling media that he will never wrestle again, calling it the biggest mistake of his career, likely due to all the negative publicity he received in the sports world.

Antonio Inoki returned to North Korea and announced that New Japan have been invited to do another major show there.

Gordon Solie has been doing the English commentary for New Japan TV shows that air in Europe. There have been rumors that they want to syndicate New Japan shows in the U.S. later this year, with Gordon Solie doing commentary.

SMW is having a show next month called The Super Bowl of Wrestling and is bringing in a lot of outside wrestlers using Jim Cornette’s WWF connections. It will feature WWF superstar Shawn Michaels vs. Buddy Landel, Rick Rude will defend the NWA World Heavyweight title and the SMW Heavweight title against USWA legend Jerry “The King” Lawler, and The Undertaker will face Unabomb. The event will also feature UFC star Dan Severn, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, The Midnight Express, The Fantastics, Well Dunn, The Armstrongs and The Heavenly Bodies.

Former WCW wrestler Jack Victory is managing a place called Club Oasis, which is a strip club in Atlanta, Georgia.

USA Today ran a story about some key sponsorships in the industry that are jumping around. MCI and Slim Jim both are former WWF sponsors and are jumping to WCW. WWF’s biggest sponsor, Nintendo, is also switching to WCW. Meanwhile, WWF is gaining Burger King, Mars, Wrigley, Nestle, and Stridex. Because wrestling is so frowned upon, companies usually shy away from it, so even though wrestling has millions of viewers, the price for advertising is extremely low. For instance, if Star Trek and WWF drew exactly the same rating, it would still cost more to advertise on Star Trek. Vince was quoted in the USA Today article, trying to distance WWF from wrestling, saying, “Wrestling is two guys in their underwear in a room beating themselves over the head. We’re not wrestling anymore. We’re sports entertainment.”

WWF’s contract with the USA Network expires in December and WWF is reportedly negotiating with the E! Network as leverage to get a better deal from USA. Monday Night Raw is a ratings phenomenon, regularly setting the highest cable ratings each week. However, the E! Network doesn’t even reach half as many homes as USA, so there’s really no leverage there at all.

There’s reports that WWF’s prime-time NBC special a few weeks ago was cancelled due to pressure from NBA commissioner David Stern, who didn’t want to allow any advertising for a pro wrestling show during the NBA playoff game that was going to be airing before it.

Independent pro wrestling promotion Tennessesse Mountain Wrestling officially opened in South Eastern U.S.A. Founded by former NWA World Heavyweight champion Ronnie Garvin. TMW is one of several promotions carrying the proud tradition of rasslin’ in the South East.

We’re halfway through 1995 and it looks like Mitsuharu Misawa is in pole position to take the Wrestler of the Year award. If he can continue his excellent performances for another six months we fully expect him to top the famous Power 500.

1995 has been kind to WCW, with a strong six months of events in the bag. Based on their shows so far, we make them current favourites to win the Company of the Year award.

Kenta Kobashi and Stan Hansen have had a fine opening six months to the year, and for that reason they look odds on to lift the Tag Team of the Year award.

With 1995 half gone, we look to the NJPW match where Shinya Hashimoto defeated Toshiaki Kawada as the favourite in the race for Match of the Year.

When NJPW ended the NJPW My Enemy Tour, we saw one of the best matches in recent memory as Kensuke Sasaki defeated Keiji Mutoh. The match is bound to be a top contender for the coveted Match of the Year award.

Waylon Mercy (Dan Spivey) leaves the World Wrestling Federation. According to our sources, the split was simply because his contract expired and he wanted to concentrate on his career in All Japan and the American Wrestling Federation.

RINGS Fighting Network saw a title change as the previously vacant Rings Openweight championship was won by former WWF worker “Iron” Mike Sharpe.

Jimmy Snuka defeated Tony Atlas for the NWA New England Heavyweight championship.

The inevitable happened last night, as Massachusetts based International Wrestling Federation officially announced their closure. The financially stricken company has had mounting debts for months, and were finally forced to admit that they could not recover.
